With its sprawling glaciers, jagged mountains and scenic fjords, the isolated islands of Svalbard are an Arctic wilderness like no other. Just a few hundred miles from the North Pole, an expedition here will probably be the most northerly adventure you’ll ever have.

In Svalbard, every season holds its own beauty. During the summer, migratory species arrive and Arctic flora brings a riot of colour to the tundra. Autumn sees the dimming glow of the Midnight Sun and winter transforms the land into a dark, icy wonderland on the northmost extreme of the inhabited world. In spring, the sun returns and brings with it Polar Bears, seals, walruses, Arctic Foxes and reindeer.

Shaped by lava below and ice above, Iceland is a country of contrasts. Here, tumbling glaciers meet sparkling fjords surrounded by towering volcanoes and smoking hills. Four fifths of the land is uninhabited and wildlife takes the lead, with around 23 whale species in the surrounding waters, joined by dolphins, seals and multitudes of seabirds. Guided by the HX Expedition Team on our Iceland cruises, you’ll explore the country’s varied landscapes, losing yourself in natural beauty as you skim the waters of a fjord by kayak, scan the waves for ocean giants on small expedition boat cruises, and walk in the realm of the gods, trolls and elves of myth and legend. You’ll visit culture-rich cities and traditional fishing villages, spend long days in forests and geothermal pools and perhaps even cross the Arctic Circle.

Greenland is a revelation. One of the world’s most enigmatic places, its natural beauty, fascinating culture and impressive wildlife remain a mystery to many. It’s this very mystery that draws in our most curious and intrepid travellers, and remains one of the many reasons to visit Greenland. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re returning to explore even more of this incredible territory, HX Hurtigruten Expeditions has the expedition for you.

Svalbard in Spring: The Return of the Sun

Spring offers some of the best chances to see polar bears on sea ice along frozen fjords, including young polar bear cubs together with their mother. As temperatures rise and daylight returns, wildlife begins its seasonal shift. Polar bears track along sea ice margins in search of seals, their primary prey. Arctic foxes emerge from dens to scavenge and hunt, while Svalbard reindeer start grazing on lichen and early growth. Seabirds like fulmars and guillemots begin to reclaim nesting sites, signalling the start of the Arctic breeding cycle. Spring in Svalbard offers brilliant snowfields, sculpted icebergs, and the soft glow of low Arctic sun. With us, you’ll explore by small boat or land ashore in places few ever reach. Every activity is led by HX’s expert Expedition Team in line with AECO guidelines and regulations from the Norwegian government, ensuring that this beautiful region remains protected for generations to come.

Circumnavigating Svalbard The Ultimate Expedition

From an icy wonderland to a rugged land bursting with life, join us as we attempt to circumnavigate the entire Svalbard archipelago during the Arctic summer. Venturing above the 80th parallel and east around Nordaustlandet, you’ll sail through dramatic fjords, past sparkling glaciers and soaring mountains over several days in the archipelago. Discover Northwest Spitsbergen National Park, explore the ever-changing ice edge, and look out for Arctic wildlife including whales, reindeer and the elusive polar bear. Going further east and deeper into polar bear territory than any of our other Svalbard expeditions, our goal is to fully circumnavigate the Svalbard archipelago – ice conditions permitting. Whether you opt to experience the ever-changing icescape of early summer, or see the kaleidoscope of colour later in the season, you’ll be immersed in incredible scenery and see iconic wildlife, with several days dedicated to exploring. Svalbard contains vast and pristine nature reserves where few humans ever set foot. It’s the domain of seabirds, such as Brunnich’s Guillemots and kittiwakes, as well as mammals like reindeer, walruses and seals. Early in the season we’ll explore close to the northern ice edge, while later on we’ll see the land bursting to life with wildflowers. As we sail, we’ll be on the lookout for marine animals in the waters around us, including graceful and mighty whales.
